Technical Jiu Jitsu For Self Defense

Photo taken at Team Rhino in Meridian Idaho

At Jungle Cat Jiu Jitsu, our focus is on technique. My professor, Keith Owen, always emphasized the importance of practicing Jiu Jitsu into old age. The only way that’s possible is by relying on technique and leverage—not just strength. Master Pedro Sauer also teaches that technique is the foundation of Jiu Jitsu, and that’s the philosophy I hope to share: training for both effectiveness and longevity.

Jiu Jitsu is one of the most powerful tools for self-defense. What makes it so effective is that we can test it on each other through live sparring, also called “rolling.” Rolling gives us a chance to pressure-test techniques in real time. As Master Sauer often says before drilling a move: “Let’s see if it works.” That’s the beauty of Jiu Jitsu—we get to find out every time we roll.

As a member of Jungle Cat Jiu Jitsu, you agree to be part of this culture. We’re committed to each other’s safety, to personal growth, and to helping our teammates grow too. When you lift your teammates up, you’re pushed to grow right along with them—and it’s a lot of fun to get good at Jiu Jitsu.

We’re also committed to keeping our space safe and clean. This is a place for learning, protecting, and enjoying the art together

REAL PEOPLE, REAL VOICES

Training with Coach Jeremy is like getting a masterclass in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while also accidentally signing up for a comedy show. He’s an incredible black belt — the kind who can break down complex techniques in a way that makes sense instantly, and then roll with you and make it feel like you’re learning and laughing at the same time. Jeremy has a rare mix of technical brilliance and personality. He’ll have the whole room cracking up with a perfectly timed joke, but then immediately flip the switch and show you details that completely change your game. You leave every class not just better at Jiu-Jitsu, but actually looking forward to the next one. If you want a coach who’s both a top-level black belt and someone who makes training genuinely fun, Jeremy is the guy. Can’t recommend him enough.

Jeremy “Jungle Cat” Corbin was killer brown belt when I started Jiu Jitsu. I was admittedly a spaz and would just try really hard to “win” every time we would roll. There was just one problem, I wasn’t doing jiu jitsu…. After about two months of him calmly controlling me while I tried to rip his head off he looked at me and asked “what are you trying to accomplish?” This took me by surprise and I realized I didn’t really have an answer . I was in his closed guard using a lot of energy not accomplishing anything. After a moment of contemplation I ask him “what should I be trying to accomplish?” He laughed and said “some technique would help” and proceed to teach me a guard escape I still use to this day.
Jeremy is a legend at taking very complex questions and giving simple answer that solve your problems immediately and some times change you game forever. He is also an exceptional human being who is kind, hilarious and sage like. I aspire to be like him in many ways and wish him all the success in the world !!!
